  15. most parachute jumps (14,650 in more than 30 years); when his
  16. parachute, which he packed himself, failed to open fully during a
  17. 2,500-ft. drop; near Sheridan, Ore. Charmet, who learned to jump
  18. while serving in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria in the
  19. 1950s, often said he lived by the chutist's adage: "Only sky
  20. divers know why birds sing."
