- <p> DIED. Roch Pierre Charmet, 59, world-record holder for the
- most parachute jumps (14,650 in more than 30 years); when his
- parachute, which he packed himself, failed to open fully during a
- 2,500-ft. drop; near Sheridan, Ore. Charmet, who learned to jump
- while serving in the French Foreign Legion in Algeria in the
- 1950s, often said he lived by the chutist's adage: "Only sky
- divers know why birds sing."
